Summer - Here and Gone

So, in my book, 2,001 Things to Do Before You Die, there is a task that says "learn a word for every day of the summer." So my friend Tacy and I decided that we would do it this summer. How did this work? Tacy would get the word of the day and then she would text it to me. It's as simple as that! Although I haven't "remembered" all the words, I still learned them. Some I knew before, but repetition is still a great way for learning! Here you are, enjoy, there are some great ones in there!



June 20th: inimical- not friendly; unfriendly

June 21st: lugubrious- expressing sorrow

June 22nd: sobriquet- (pronounced so-brih-kay) a nickname

June 23rd: nocebe- a harmless substance that when taken by a patient is associated with harmful effects

June 24th: woolgathering- indulgence in idle daydreaming

June 25th: obstensible- representing or appearing to be true but not necessarily so

June 26th: bespoke- an adjective meaning custom made

June 27th: cacophonous- having an unpleasant sound

June 28th: sentient- aware; sensitive in perception or feeling

June 29th: jog trot- a routine habit or course of action *Example*Going to the spa was a nice alternative to the jog trot of life

June 30th: partinaceous- the nature of or relating to a parsnip



July 1st: trichotillomania- an abnormal desire to pull ones hair

July 2nd: reify- to regard something abstract as a material or concrete thing

July 3rd: peregrine- having a tendency to wonder

July 4th: cynosure- a center of attention

July 5th: machine macadam- a roadway or pavement of small closely packed broken stone (how perfect that I got this word while up at the cabins. There was a lot of machine macadams up there.)

July 6th: turpitude- inherent baseness: a base act *Example*The judge declared that the murders were the product of a gross moral turpitude.

July 7th: weltanschauung- *Pronunciation*velt-ahn-show(ow like cow)-ung; a persons idea or view of the world

July 8th: wahine- a female surfer; a Polynesian woman



July 9th: emolument- *Pronunciation*ih-mol-yuh-munt; the wages arising from office employment

July 10th: louche- *Pronunciation*loosh; of questionable taste or morality

July 11th: ignominious- humiliating; degrading

July 12th: pueirle- *Pronunciation*pyoo-uhr-uhl; displaying or suggesting a lack of maturity

July 13th: lionize- to treat as an object or great interest or importance

July 14th: indurate- physically or morally hardened

July 15th: occam's razor- requiring that the simplest of competing theories be preferred to the more complex *Example*Invoking occam's razor, Eli concluded that the sill was wet because someone had left the window ompen during the storm

July 16th: gelid- extremely cold

July 17th: superannuated- old fashioned; older than the typical member of a specific group

July 18th: bogart- to us or consume without sharing (or a character from Harry Potter)



July 19th: pugilist- a boxer (How fitting, the more they get punched in the face, the more they will look like a pug.)

July 20th: asperse- to attack with evil reports or false charges

July 21st: epigone- follower; an inferior imitator

July 22nd: caustic- marked by incisive sarcasm (I already knew this one, but it still work. This definition is our families.)

July 23rd: natatorial- *Pronunciation*starts with a nay sound; of or relating to swimming

July 24th: soupcon- *Pronunciation*con is pronounced sawng but the final ng is not pronounced and the vowel is nasalized; a little bit; a trace

July 25th: bindle stiff- a hobo; someone who carries their close in a bundle



July 26th: prevenient- an antecedent *Example*What aroused my hackles when I saw the reports on the academy's findings was the prevenient sense that is was a propaganda statement.

July 27th: embonpoint- *Pronunciation*aw-bo-pwa (French); the plumpness of a person; the most plump section of a person

July 28th: xanadu- an idyllic, exotic, or luxurious place

July 29th: impecunious- *Pronunciation*im-pih-kyoo-nee-uss; having very little or no money usually habitually; penniless

July 30th: wangle- to make or get by devious means; finagle

July 31st: oldster- an old or elderly person



August 1st: progeny- outcome, product

August 2nd: cursory- rapidly and often superficially performed or produced; hasty

August 3rd: divagate- to wander or stray from course or subject; diverge, digress

August 4th: cicerone- mentor; tutor

August 5th: vituperate- *Pronunciation*vy-too-puh-rate; to find fault with; to scold; to overwhelm with wordy abuse

August 6th: brummagem- cheap and showy. *Term given to any showy but inferior object.

August 7th: asperity- rough or harshness of sound; roughness of manner; roughness of surface

August 8th: mau-mau - *Pronunciation*mow-mow, the ow is like cow; to intimidate by hostile confrontation or threats



August 9th: tittle-tattle - a gossip

August 10th: grub street- he world of needy literary hacks

August 11th: anathema- someone or something intensely disliked or loathed

August 12th: homily- a lecture or discourse on or of a moral theme

August 13th: bevy- *Pronunciation*bev-ee; a large group or collection



August 14th: redoubt- a defendable position; protective barrier; a secure retreat

August 15th: innocuous- inoffensive; not likely to give offense or to arouse strong or hostility

August 16th: farce- a mockery

August 17th: spavined- old and decrepit; over-the-hill

August 18th: knell- a death signal; a warning of or a sound indicating the passing away of anything

August 19th: beleauguer- trouble; harass

August 20th: rapporter- *Pronunciation*ra-por-TRE; a person who gives reports (Really now?)



August 21st: trepidation- timorous uncertain agitation

August 22nd: idee fixe- an idea that dominates one's mind especially for a prolonged period; obsession

August 23rd: callow- lacking adult sophistication; immature ;) hehe

August 24th: aggregate- the whole sum or amount; total

August 25th: dilapidate- to bring into a condition of decay or partial ruin

August 26th: sophistry- subtly deceptive reasoning or argument

August 27th: pejorative- having negative connotations

August 28th: naif- a naive or inexperienced person

August 29th: bumptious- presumptuously and often noisily self-assertive

August 30th: fop- a man who is overly concerned with his dress and appearance (love it!)



August31st: nadir- the lowest point


September 1st: nomenclature- a system of set of terms or symbols especially in a particular science, discipline, or art (Know this one, thanks to Interior Design. Used for cabinetry. Like SB36 stands for a 36" Sink Base)

September 2nd: comestible- suitable to be eaten

September 3rd: appellation- an identifying name of title

September 4th: haptic- relating to or based on the sense of touch

September 5th: immolate- to kill or destroy, often by fire

September 6th: sanguine- confident; optimistic

September 7th: misprision- misunderstanding; misinterpretation

September 8th: plaintive- expressive of sorrow or melancholy; mournful; sad

September 9th: circumlocution- the use of an unnecessarily large number of words to express ab idea

September 10th: kvell- to be extraordinarilly proud

September 11th: arcanum- mysterious of specialized knowledge language or information accessible or possessed only by the initiate

September 12th: replete- fully or abundantly provided or filled



September 13th: vexillology- the study of flags

September 14th: eponymous- of or relating to or being one for whom or which something is or is believing to be named

September 15th: culminate- to reach the highest point

September 16th: lout- and awkward brutish person

September 17th: surly- irritably sullen in mood or manner

September 18th: euphony- pleasing or sweet sound

September 19th: tetchy- irritably or peevishly sensitive

September 20th: voracity- the quality or state of being ravenous or instable

September 21st: myopic- near sighted

September 22nd: panoply- a splendid or impressive array

The last was a great one to end on. In the words of Tacy, "that describes our summer of words I do believe." And yes, yes it does.

wow.. im not going to lie.. that was really really long haha! and im not sure if i have ever used or heard any of those words in a sentence.. very interesting.. now im going to take some advil for my headache (too much thinking) haha!

Nice word usage Chels!! haha And I love ma music as wull! Whenever I hear a song that I like, I write it down and then add it! I loves it! ha And I hope that the rest of you do to! It's very "collectic." :)

HAHA I LOVE that picture! Isn't it awesome. I knew that I needed to use that for fop. When I got that word, that was one of the things that I thought of! ha

HAHA Yes, it is a long post, but it's for EVERY DAY of the summer. :) Hey, now I can say that I leaned something everyday! :D hehe

I'm glad! :D Hip hip! I say that everyone needs to get this book! It's so much fun! And if you don't have anything to do, you can flip through it and find something. If you've never had a Yoo-Hoo (I haven't) then you can go get one and mark that one off the list. It's makes for simple fun.

speaking of 2001 things to do before you die near the end somewhere it says "Read Alexander and the terrible horrible no good very bad day" and guess what book I found on my bookshelf. Yep! I'll bring it to school
